On January 24, 2005, the Feast of Saint Francis de Sales, Patron Saint of Journalists, the late Servant of God John Paul II released an Apostolic Letter entitled “On the Rapid Development” addressed to “...those responsible for Communications”. In this letter, written for the 40th Anniversary of the Second Vatican Council’s Inter Mirifica, he addressed the “Marvelous Things” which the Church is called to proclaim in every age. He also strongly affirmed the use of all communicative technologies in this missionary task. The use of these technologies is integral to the “New Evangelization” of our age. Toward the end of this short but prophetic letter he wrote these words: “To those working in communication, especially to believers involved in this important field of society, I extend the invitation which, from the beginning of my ministry as Pastor of the Universal Church, I have wished to express to the entire world “Do not be afraid!” Do not be afraid of new technologies! These rank “among the marvelous things” – inter mirifica –which God has placed at our disposal to discover, to use and to make known the truth, also the truth about our dignity and about our destiny as his children, heirs of his eternal Kingdom. Do not be afraid of being opposed by the world! Jesus has assured us, “I have conquered the world!” (Jn 16:33)” The Servant of God John Paul II called for the mobilization of what has now become a convergent media. The “marvelous things” which he addressed must now be placed fully at the service of the Christian mission. About Catholic Online © 2008 TCMA.
