
Frequently Asked Questions1. This sounds really good but you are brand new. What can you promise me now? We are working very hard at providing member benefits as soon as possible. Our magazine, certification program will launch in September. We have scheduled our first webinar for late August. This webinar will be open to the public and explain TCMA in greater detail. The reasons we announced the beginning of TCMA before many of the benefits were available was to involve our members in the process of refining our offerings. As with any new organization, we will have to build a track record for delivering quality experiences. We will have to earn your trust during our "shakedown" period. A special feature called "The President's Blog" is coming online during the first part of June. Here we will be updating our members on what is taking place while getting their input. We not only want to talk about social networking, we want to practice it! 2. I'm a member of the Catholic Press Association. Isn't TCMA the same thing? TCMA is not like the Catholic Press Association at all. Primarily made up of publishers, editors, and journalists for catholic newpapers, magazines, and diocesan papers, CPA provides a valuable service to the Church which we applaud. Many of our members are also a part of the CPA. TCMA is an association-based community of those involved in a variety of communications disciplines. We exist to equip, educate, and engage those in various media expressions. We are also focusing heavily on new technologies that are emerging in this exciting new world of social networking. In addition, we are a home for Catholic media professionals who work in the secular arena and would like to affiliate with an organization of like-minded and like-hearted individuals. 3. I work for a secular media company. Can I join TCMA even if my organization doesn't? Absolutely! We see a tremendous opportunity for media professionals to connect with others involved in the public and private sectors. We are already receiving a number of applications from those in marketplace. This is also a great way to explore opportunities for using your skills and expertise on behalf of the Church. Perhaps the Lord is calling you to begin a blog, a video program, a podcast, etc. We can become a part of the refining and releasing of your vision. 4. What is the TCMA Certification Program all about? We are putting together a certification program that we will begin in September of 2008. Through a curriculum of study and practicum-based experiences, we will be offering individuals the opportunity to be officially recognized as a "Certified Religious Media Specialist." This would not only involve exposure to specific media technologies and practices, but also immersion in the Church's documents on the use of media. We also will include an ethics and morals section, based on the Catechism and the social teachings of the Church regarding leadership and expression with respect to the world of social networking. 5. How is Catholic Online involved in TCMA? Catholic Online was one of the early developers of the TCMA concept and continues to operate as a strong supporter of our vision and values. They are currently our principle vendor in a number of areas. Catholic Online has generously provided TCMA with complete web hosting services as well as the proprietary technologies, logistical support, and data services necessary to carry out our mission. As the largest Catholic integrated media portal, they have also offered a number of their services and resources to our membership as a part of benefits. 6. I live in Italy. Is TCMA an international association? By all means, welcome aboard! We anticipate a large number of members to come from places outside of the North American Continent. While there will be some gatherings that will physically take place in the United States, most of our activities will happen online. International members don't have to pay the same amount, as the geographic gatherings are not available to them. But, who knows! As TCMA grows worldwide, what would stop us from hosting an international conference from time to time! 7. I have been in media for many years and believe I have something I can offer to TCMA. Is there a way for me to use my talents? This is one of the aspects of TCMA that most excite us. We will have a number of ways that members can be involved, using their gifts and talents on behalf of Christ and His Church. We will be offering forums and blogs in which to participate as well as a monthly eZine, called "MEDIAtions" that will need content. We also expect that those from our membership will lead many of our webinars. Recognizing Holy Scripture's admonition that "a laborer is worthy of his hire," we plan on instructors making money through their webinars. 8. I don't work professionally in media but I have a Catholic blog I write on a regular basis. Is TCMA for professionals only? TCMA is for Catholic Communicators whether they are paid or not. Some of the most fruitful media exposure today comes from blogs, podcasts, and other social networking venues that are carried out without regard to income.The term "amateur" has taken some hits in recent years and is often relegated to second-class status with the assumption that professionals automatically have more knowledge. The term actually means one who does a thing simply "for the love of it." We know there are many in this category, who just have a love of communications. The new world of social networking, also called Web 2.0, offers more opportunity than ever before for amateurs to grow in their skills and knowledge. 9. What can I do IMMEDIATELY to get involved? Are you looking for member officers, chapter formation, etc? This is the kind of enthusiasm we are looking for! We see so much for the future, including volunteer leaders in a number of areas, online interest forums, regional chapters, etc. Right now we need help getting the word out about TCMA. Tell your friends and others you know that are Catholics in the media world. The best way we can grow as an organization is through referrals. Let's begin a TCMA membership pandemic! As a charter member you will be helping to establish the foundation for generations of members yet to come. 10. I am working for a media company but also a student... what membership affiliation fits me? Student memberships are intended for those in school full-time, providing membership with a price break. If you are a full-time student and working part-time, I would advise you to take a student membership.
